This International Women’s Day (IWD), we at Terra View Homes are celebrating the women on our team and around the world who are making a difference in the green building landscape. This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #ChooseToChallenge, which recognizes that “we can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality.”
We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements, while committing to greater inclusion by women in the construction industry — not only on International Women’s Day — but ongoing.
We found this message particularly fitting for all the women who work in the building and construction sector, a field traditionally dominated by men. Although the number of women in construction is slowly increasing, they still only make up 4.7% of tradespeople working in the industry. While it’s important that we celebrate how far we’ve come, there’s still a long way to go if we wish to reach gender parity within this field. To do so we must continue to encourage more women to seek out opportunities in the trades by creating workplaces that are respectful and inclusive.
At Terra View Homes, we are extremely fortunate to work alongside such outstanding women — women who show up everyday fully committed and ready to put in the work needed to create a more sustainable future. By supporting more women leaders in the green building industry and realizing the potential for greater participation, new perspectives and ideas can be brought to the table. This collective effort is needed if we wish to help Canada reach their goals of net zero emissions by 2050.
It’s important to recognize that climate change does not discriminate based on gender; it impacts all humankind. If we want to achieve true and lasting change we must all stand together and choose to challenge. Happy International Women’s Day, from Terra View Homes!
